There are 330 locations in that list, but only 323 are becoming Dollar General. Any idea on the 7 remaining locations?CalItalian wrote:Post by CalItalian » Today, 12:49 am

Re: Dollar General Buys Dollar Express (Family Dollar)
So it looks like only a few stores actually ended up re-branding to Dollar Express'? The writing should have been on the wall that this group of stores was going to be closed or sold off at some point. Obviously they couldn't keep using the Family Dollar name forever. Kind of a crappy move that everyone has to be laid off during the switch though.

"A company spokesman would not elaborate on what became of the seven other stores that were originally part of the 330-store package, nor did the company say what prompted its decision to sell."

This was another FTC-ordered sale of stores....
Another failure of this nature just adds to Haggen as an example for why the Rite Aid/Walgreens transaction needs to be denied by the FTC.

No way can any independent entity successfully operate an autonomous chain of 323-330 stores spread across 36 states against competitors operating more than ten thousand stores each, even an entity with the financial resources of Sycamore Partners.storewanderer wrote:This was another FTC-ordered sale of stores....

Re: Dollar General Buys Dollar Express (Family Dollar)
I went into one of these closing Family Dollar locations. Most categories were 15% off and the store was about 40% stocked.
Looking at the place, you would never know it was not an actual Family Dollar without looking very, very closely. They still had lots of Family Dollar private label items, pricing, etc. was all the same too. I did notice some odd off branded napkins and paper towels in fairly large quantity that I suspect were items Dollar Express can take credit for, but that was really it. Plastic bags were all normal Family Dollar bags.
It was not until I went to pay for a couple snacks that the "differences" became more noticeable. While waiting in line I noticed some binders and memos with the Dollar Express logo taped around the register area. Also, they use what looks like the same POS as Family Dollar, but it is actually not the same POS, it is a newer version of the same thing, basically. They do not support American Express or Contactless (Apple Pay) like the rest of Family Dollar does. They did not require a signature for a small transaction paid with a Chip Card, while the rest of Family Dollar does require a signature for all chip card transactions regardless of amount (but no signature for swipe or Contactless under $50).
