My guess is the speedy approval was assisted by Amazon's pledge to cut prices at Whole Food on Monday.klkla wrote:Trying to merge Whole Foods and Sprouts would probably raise anti-trust concerns. While Amazon and Whole Foods didn't really compete directly it's a different story with Whole Foods and Sprouts.storewanderer wrote:That was awfully prompt approval. Maybe now Amazon can purchase Sprouts too. Holding both Whole Foods and Sprouts would be very strategic in my opinion.
The New York Times as an interesting article about some of the changes planned by amazon:
https://www.nytimes.com/2017/08/24/tech ... prime.html
From the article:
"The era of Whole Paycheck, the nickname some use for Whole Foods, may be drawing to a close. Amazon, which takes control of the upscale grocer on Monday, intends to slash prices the same day."
"Amazon plans to weave together its online business and physical stores by turning its Prime membership program into a Whole Foods rewards program, providing additional savings to customers. Amazon Prime is a $99-a-year service that gives customers faster free shipping, video streaming and other benefits."

Re: Amazon to purchase Whole Foods for $13.7Billion
Prices at Whole Foods have gone down. The prices range from 20 cents to a dollar or so. Even with the discounted prices, the food is still overpriced.
This strategy may attract new customers, but whether or not they will return is another question.
The stores are selling Amazon Echo devices. Perhaps, they may begin selling more electronic devices. They could start to sell cell phones and cell service.

Although still early, I'm curious how Amazon is viewing this acquisition.
