Interesting news on the DFW Kroger front this morning: Dallas Morning News Article (Paywalled)
Kroger has announced that its store at 9700 Coit Road in Plano will be closing at a yet to be announced date and will be undergoing a "major relocation" to another site nearby, with all staff making the move to the new store. This move is curious, as this store was built fairly recently in 2004 and is fairly large for a non-Marketplace store at 73,742 square feet. No information about the new site has been announced yet. Kroger owns this property outright, so lease expiration isn't a factor here. It is also located in a high traffic growth corridor and seems to pull good traffic. My guess is that a developer has lured Kroger into a nearby development and the offer was to good to pass up. It's just quite odd that Kroger would abandon a high visibility and newer location such as this, especially in a major growth area.

The existing store looks great but that interior is being aggressively remodeled at this time so it seems stores with that interior are up for remodel (or in this case, relocation).
With how long Kroger takes to build anything it'll be a couple years before the new store opens.
Also @HCal this store 9700 Coit Road Plano, TX would be what Kroger would have considered a "Signature" store. Some older photos have it signed outside as such.

If they want to move and its a location issue, then why announce it without any announcement about what the new store will have? Sounds to me like it will end up being "okay, this store is closing, the new store is coming soon, see you in two years" or "we're 'relocating' to a new store 20 miles away, you're invited to come if you want".
And if they wanted to close, there are Tom Thumb stores to the south and west about two miles away. Neither appear to be putting the hurt on Kroger, so there must be other reasons. And if it isn't a stealth closure, there's no reason why Kroger can't operate both locations.

Looking further at planning and zoning agendas for the City of Plano, there appears to be a retail-anchored center in the works at the southwest corner of this intersection. The retail space here appears to be the size of a typical grocer. My guess is that Kroger is relocating here to prevent a competitor from moving in directly across the street, while putting a deed restriction on the old store to prevent a competitor from moving in.

But Kroger has, in the past, done all sorts of store replacements over the years across all of its divisions. They build a larger store (always larger), they move, the old one gets recycled into non-grocery retail. They don't make cryptic statements about moving to a new, unknown location without giving any details.
