Re: Fred Meyer attempts to curb shrink "a new way"

(sigh) Like their own loss prevention officer that stole $200,000 by obscuring herself while "servicing" the self checkout machines? https://www.wweek.com/news/2019/03/05/loss-prevention-manager-at-a-portland-fred-meyer-convicted-of-stealing-over-200000-from-self-checkout-machines/ This store must r...

Re: MOD Pizza and the rise of Fast Casual pizza chains

Blaze went under after opening in Beaverton, Ore. (don't know why). We also have the other California competitor as a locally-franchised store, Pieology. https://www.pieology.com/locations They seem to be trying to differentiate themselves. I find MOD quite enjoyable, and in Portland, around $8-10 i...

Re: Western Family being replaced by Food Club at Associated Food Stores??

Discovered a blog post by URM Stores that notes that both they and Associated Foods decided to align with Topco due to the SuperValu / United Stores merger (which of course is now held by UNFI). http://www.urmstores.com/about-us/exclusive-brands-transition/ The plan was to transition throughout 2018...

Re: Albertsons/Safeway 2018 & 2019: Openings and Closings

Here's an article link that is not behind a paywall. Usual concerns, no other grocer within walking distance of older residents, etc. Sounds like the neighborhood may be changing, but also has historically been lower-income. One quoted shopper says that it was cheaper than VONS. Could that really be...

Re: Albertsons/Safeway 2018 & 2019: Openings and Closings

"Lucky" Low Prices in El Centro, CA is closing. This leaves the Albertsons-operated Lucky stores with only one store left in California, in South Gate, CA. https://www.ivpressonline.com/news/local/business/lucky-grocery-to-close-june/article_2a5071f8-72cc-11e9-b2d6-8f9f8ca00f7e.html (unfortunately b...

So... apparently they are going to have a candlelight vigil farewell. People really had some love for this store.

TV advertising

In the Philadelphia market I've seen bookends for Aldi (specials), Giant (every day low prices / Bonus Buys / official partner of the Phillies). Via a column in RadioINK: by using Scarborough, you can determine what percentage of your market is consuming the bulk of television. The example I created...

Wawa

Anyone else been to one? Definitely a nice fresh food at low price option here in Philadelphia. I'm sure that's part of why I've not seen any Subway shops so far.

The northwestern United States really has the worst gas stations / mini-markets.
