This will become a very common sight going forward. They goofed removing self checkout from so many stores, especially in dense areas, and especially marginal stores where staffing is tight and the labor budget justifies having only 1-2 cashiers at any given time, causing lines to happen even in slow stores. They never really did remove them from high volume stores...
If a store is too low volume to justify having self checkouts, it probably should close.

Totally agree. This location never had the self-checkouts They used to have four express and three full-service registers. With the bank up front and the Starbucks next to the registers there was no room for them. The bank closed and was replaced by "Guest Services." The former service desk and what appears to have been storage is now Starbucks. The new hot food bar and a refrigerated case with high-end cheese and grab-and-cook-at-home meals (Signature Cafe, not Plated) takes up part of the Starbucks footprint. The remaining former Starbucks footprint plus the removal of two of the four express lanes is where four self-checkouts are located. Now they will have four self-checkouts, three full-order lanes and two express lanes. No partridges or pear trees, however.storewanderer wrote: ↑November 8th, 2018, 11:57 pm This will become a very common sight going forward. Although they could attempt to grow a pear tree if they leave their produce around too long...rwsandiego wrote: ↑November 9th, 2018, 11:10 amTotally agree. Re: Safeway 7th Street and McDowell Road Remodel
I am with you on this one. The strip lighting has a glare effect along the line of the ceiling that shows the ripples and deformed edges of older ceiling tiles. 10-20 year old ceiling tiles tend to curl up along the edges and bulge down in the middle....esp the cheap tiles used here. These LED tube lights completely show the imperfections in the ceiling. This is about as bare bone ass cheap you can get with lighting today. The strip fixture chosen rivals what is used in big lots and dollar general. It has no place in a mid to upper tier grocery store. As far as I am concerned the people making these lighting decisions are out of touch with the look and feel customers are desiring these days in grocery stores.
Poor decisions like this reflect a decaying company that is out of touch with modern consumers. In Chicagoland Jewel has been desperately trying to compete with places like Marianos, Whole Foods. Most of this is by adding a few hot foods stations, a new decor package and new strip lighting. The look is cheap and most of the Jewel stores are now cluttered and disshelved, with pallet displays of merchandise cluttering open spaces. Employees have been cut and finding help on the sales floor is a miracle. The competition is now designing stores with track lighting, LED decorative lighting, unique graphics and clean open aisles and aisles filled with knowledgeable employees. I can’t undertsnd what it is going on in the heads of the leaders for the Albertsons/Safeway stores, but designing a cutting edge grocery environment is not one of them.
